A huge lump blocking the intestines,Endoscopic EMR surgery to relieve the “big hidden danger”

Many people in life think that the dampness is too heavy when they see their stool not forming properly……Actually, malformed stool is not only due to heavy dampness, but also possibly due to the formation of a lump in the intestines over a long period of time!

Long term malformed stool, thinking its due to heavy moisture

Unexpectedly suffering from multiple polyps of the colon

Mr. Jiang (pseudonym),who is 58 years old this year, has been distressed by "unformed stool" for a long time, and the symptoms of unformed stool have lasted for 6 years. Mr. Jiang always thought it was because of his heavy dampness, so he took a lot of Chinese medicine to regulate it, but his symptoms still did not improve. He did not find any obvious abnormalities in the local hospital’s examination and did not improve after receiving medication treatment. Recently, not only the symptoms worsened, but also intermittent abdominal pain has occurred. The family felt uneasy and accompanied Mr. Jiang to Xi'an Weitai Digestive Disease Hospital for treatment.

Mr. Jiang was treated by Chi Shengqun, the director of the outpatient department of Xi'an Weitai Digestive Disease Hospital. After listening to Mr. Xu's symptom description, Chi Shengqun recommended that he undergo a colonoscopy to further diagnose the cause.

At the Digestive Endoscopy Center, Deputy Director Xu Mingliang conducted a colonoscopy for Mr. Jiang. Under the microscope, he found 9 large and small Yamada type 2, type 3 and type 4 intestinal polyps visible in the colon and rectum. The small one were about 0.5*0.7cm, and the largest ones ware about 2.8*3.6cm, almost blocked the intestine. The probability of this large tumor turning into cancer is relatively high.

Endoscopic Mucosal Resection(EMR)

Doctor perform endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) to quickly remove multiple intestinal polyps

Heard that Mr. Xu has multiple polyps growing in his intestines, with the largest polyp exceeding 2.5cm,his family is very worried. Director Xu Mingliang patiently comforted and told Mr. Xu's family, "Don't worry, this kind of polyp can be resolved under colonoscopy and recovers quickly." When Mr. Jiang's family breathed a sign of relief upon hearing the news and agreed to undergo the EMR surgery.

After determining the treatment method, Director Xu Mingliang carefully positioned, injected ,and used a trap to electrocut the polyps. Step by step,9 intestinal polyps were completely removed, and tissue clips were used to seal the wound. The surgery was successful. After the operation, 4 postoperative polyps tissues were sent for pathological examination, which showed a villous tubular adenoma that is prone to malignant transformation. Fortunately, timely resection was performed, effectively preventing the occurrence of colon cancer.

"I thought I was going to have a major operation, but I didn't expect it to be solved by colonoscopy!" Mr. Jiang said happily. Returning to the inpatient ward, Mr. Jiang resumed his diet on the second day and was discharged from the hospital on the sixth day. Before discharge, Director Xu Mingliang instructed Mr. Jiang to undergo a follow-up examination in six months.

Recovery after EMR surgery

Colonoscopy is the gold standard for screening for intestinal diseases

Director Xu Mingliang said that colonoscopy is not as painful as rumors or online claims. With the advancement of technology, endoscopes have become increasingly soft and slender, and the time required for colonoscopy is also very short, usually around 15-20 minutes. It is recommended that everyone undergo a colonoscopy after the age of 40.

High risk individuals without a family history of intestinal polyps and first-degree relatives with cancer will undergo colonoscopy every 5 years thereafter.People with intestinal polyps and a family history need to advance the initial screening time by about 10 years and undergo colonoscopy at the age of 25 to 35. If intestinal polyps are found after colonoscopy, the frequency of examination should be more frequent. For the next three years, colonoscopy should be performed every year to determine the frequency of the next examination based on the growth of the polyp.
